If there's the Principle of Least Attraction is true - then what the heck is up with lightening?

Nature wants to move as little as possible. So light moves in a straight line, a ball falls straight to the earth, etc. However, lightning moves in zig zags down to the earth/within the clouds? Whats the deal.
