I don't have a serger, can I just zig zag then cut with scissors along the edge?

I don't have a serger. I'm learning to sew clothing. I like the look of visible serged edges on hems or tops, rather than just folding them. Do you think I can just zig zag the edges then cut it myself with scissors very close to the zig zag? Is that almost the same as using a serger? Maybe I should buy a used serger on craigslist, but they're so expensive.
